Welty studied in Wisconsin and New York City before settling in Jackson, MS where she pursued careers as both a writer and a photographer. Chronicling depression-era life in the South, her photographs, which she sometimes referred to as “snapshots,” poignantly capture her subjects’ public and private moments in a sensitive and compassionate way.
