Castle was a self-taught artist who was born deaf and lived his entire life with family members in Idaho. Rejecting common art materials in favor of sharpened sticks, soot, saliva, and found paper, Castle created drawings and sculptural objects that served not only as a representation of his world but as a means to communicate his inner experience and perception.
